Edit by : ServerSentry is a small Windows Service application for checking that services and processes are running. If the status of monitored service or process changes, an email is sent to an Administrator immediately.

What ServerSentry does:
Notify administrators of service startup, shutdown and failure.

Notify administrators of user process startup and shutdown.

Notify administrators when Windows has started, and when windows is shutting down.

Write all process and service information to the event log.

What ServerSentry cannot do:
ServerSentry cannot restart processes or services that have stopped.

ServerSentry cannot run an executable or script when a process shuts down.

These functions can be performed by Windows already. See the "Recovery" tab under Service Properties in the Windows services control panel applet for more information.

ServerSentry can be configured to send out an alert email when Windows is shutdown. During the Windows Shutdown procedure, Windows will first log off any logged on users and terminate any user processes. Once the user has been logged off, a signal is sent to all Windows services (including ServerSentry) that shutdown is occurring. About 20 seconds after this signal has been sent, Windows will power off or restart the computer, whether or not the services have completed their shutdown procedures.

For this reason, it is very important that ServerSentry finishes sending any shutdown notification email messages before the 20 second period expires, otherwise the notifications will not be sent correctly.

Since all the services are sent their shutdown notifications simultaneously, ServerSentry cannot rely on other services during this period, including the event log service or a local SMTP service. For this reason, ServerSentry cannot log windows shutdown events to the event log, and administrators should ensure that ServerSentry does not use the local SMTP server. you can free download ServerSentry 1.0 now.
