Safety Net 1.15 Description
"Most of us have heard it said that Linux/Unix are a more secure operating system"
Edit By BS Editor: Most of us have heard it said that Linux/Unix are a more secure operating system then Microsoft Windows. There is some truth in this, but it has less to do with the differences in the security architecture Between these operating systems, and more to do with the way security is managed by the user. On a Unix system, there are a number of built in user accounts, the most permissive of these is the Root account, (the Windows equivalent is the Administrator account). It is very rare that a Unix user will log in as the Root of that system, this is only done when, for example, upgrades or patches to the operating system are required. The rest of the time the user is logged in with a far more limited account, that still allows them levels of access needed to perform most operations, but not enough access to cause serious damage to the operating system.
Windows has a Similar system of account management. On a corporate network, users are seldom Administrators, but assigned a set of rights and privileges that are enough to do their work, but not so permissive that they can make serious changes to the computer software. These controls are centrally managed through system policies and applied through a network management system called Active Directory.
The point is that Windows does have a very good security system, but where it departs from Unix, is that by default, the account created during installation, and the one that most pc users access for all operations, is the Administrator account.
The Administrator account has by default almost complete access to all systems, can make any change, and install any software. This becomes a problem when using some software, such as internet aware appliances like a browser or mail client, because when you start these applications, they inherit your security token, they run with the same rights as the user. you can free download Safety Net 1.15 now.
