"Swim into Social Studies 1" is divided into five sections:

- Home: Old Tom the Turtle? introduces his friends to the concept of scale by using a plan of a house. Cedric the Starfish? learns what it is to be part of the Lagoon family through experiencing basic rules, responsibilities and relationships (decision making and chores). Visit with Percy the Penguin? and his family to explore how each member of the family recognizes their responsibilities and describes the positive consequences of working together.
- School : Sophia the Lobster? shows her friends the plan or map of her new school.Using the plan, they INVESTigate all the different rooms and routes in the school. In his hot air balloon, Freddy the Flying Fish? draws a map of the community around the school. He learns that maps show real things but not real sizes. Reading the map Freddy investigates the shortest routes to get to and from school and go on outings. Mama Penguin? explains to her class the reason for school rules both in the classroom and around the school. The children learn about rules, cooperation and safety.
- Community: Albert the Albatross? introduces children to the purpose and importance of a community map. Children learn about symbols, legends and routes using the community map. Shelly the Crab? visits a new community and is introduced to some of the people who live and work in the community. She meets the community workers and learns abouts their jobs and their hobbies. Cedric the Starfish? explores the different ways in which people get around in the community. Children are introduced to words dealing with transporation.
- Maps: Freddy the Flying Fish? makes a map and draws small pictures to represent real things. He introduces children to map symbols while extending vocabulary by naming the symbols, e.g., farm, airport, police.
