As a child, due to her love of animals, Julia originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but later studied journalism. When her brother, Eric Roberts, achieved some success in Hollywood, Julia decided to try acting. Roberts first caught the attention of moviegoers with her performance in the film Mystic Pizza (1988). Julia's biggest success was in the signature movie Pretty Woman (1990), for which Julia got an Oscar nomination, and also won the People's Choice award for Favorite Actress. She won critical acclaim and finally nabbed an Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the 2001. Julia met her husband, cameraman Danny Moder and were married July 4, 2002 in Taos, New Mexico, and welcomed Twins - Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter on November 28, 2004. Julia has also become involved with UNICEF charities.

In 1991, Roberts was engaged to actor Kiefer Sutherland but the relationship was broken a few days before the wedding. Julia escaped to Europe with Jason Patric. She later was married to country and western singer Lyle Lovett shortly after their meeting, but divorced in 1995, due to their respective career demands that kept them apart. Julia also briefly dated Matthew Perry and Daniel Day-Lewis. For a time she lived with actor Liam Neeson and dated Benjamin Bratt from 1998 to 2001.

Roberts met her husband, cameraman Danny Moder, on the set of her movie The Mexican in 2000. The couple were married July 4, 2002, in Taos, New Mexico. They became the parents of twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter on November 28, 2004.
