What is MICR Check Printing?MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. MICR can also refer to the special font used to print the numbers and symbols at the bottom of a check. The "MICR Line" at the bottom of a check allows your bank account information by machine.
Why would I want to print MICR checks? If you have a laser printer with good quality toner, it is very likely you can print your checks without special toner. Blank check stock is significantly cheaper than preprinted checks. If you change banks, move, or for any other reason need to change the information on your checks, you do not have to order new forms. If you are a payroll service (prepare payroll for multiple clients) you would not need separate checks for each client!

131L - check body on the top
136L - check body in the Middle
495L - check body in the middle - no background printing in the MICR area

Will my bank accept the checks I print? It is best to have your bank to test several sample checks. If you have a good quality laser printer (HP, Canon, Lexmark), the checks will probably be acceptable using your normal toner. If you have a jet or dot Matrix printer, MICR check printing is not recommended. The key is how much iron oxide is in the toner - 30% will probably work - 40% or higher will almost certainly be acceptable. If the bank "rejects" the checks, you can purchase and use special MICR toner cartridges which are guaranteed to meet the MICR specifications.
What kind of paper should I use? You will need blank check stock. DO NOT use plain paper! Blank check stock has security features (watermarks, micro printing, etc.) which help prevent fraud. you can free download Medlin MICR Check Printing 4.0 now.
